Some people face difficult challenges in life, which leads them to yearn for divine guidance. Others simply hope for a connection beyond their temporal earthly relationships. Are there supportive beings for each person, available to provide guidance and protection?
Who are Angels and Spirit Guides?
Spirit guides range from archetypal and benevolent beings such as Jesus and Buddha to deceased friends and loved ones. According to Ted Andrews, author of How to Meet & Work With Spirit Guides, "They can inspire creativity, help us open to abundance, and provide insight and information."
Some believe that spirit guides who have lived on earth in the past are joined by angels, fairies and nature spirits who have never taken an earthly body.
According to Sonia Choquette, author of Ask Your Guides, spirit guides are like good friends who listen without judgment, and won't control or overpraise. "You're building a relationship with light beings who offer their help with love and friendship."
What do Angels and Spirit Guides Want to Say?
In an interview with Suite101, Intuitive Diana Byrnes says, "Angels and spirit guides want people to know that they're not alone and that there is no separation. We're all together in source consciousness, we're all divine, and we're all God."
Byrnes says people can ask their angels and spirit guides for what they want, from major life issues to smaller requests such as a good parking space. Rather than feeling "bothered" by repeated requests, spirit guides are always happy to help. "Nothing is to small to ask for," says Byrnes.
How Angels and Spirit Guides Communicate
Spirits can communicate with people through synchronicity, such as hearing a song associated with a loved one and then having that person call. People can sense spirits as they were in their earthly form or through colors, lights, shadows, animals, smells, feelings, words, or sounds.
According to Byrnes, everyone has intuition and some degree of ability to communicate with the spirit realm. "Our culture has become so left brained that it's hard for some people to recognize spirit guides. But everyone has intuition." Byrnes suggests sound healing or automatic writing as possible techniques to attune to the divine energy.
How to Get Better at Hearing Spirits
Byrnes suggests asking for protection and then calling in benevolent beings of light such as Jesus or Buddha and asking, "Do you have a message for me?" The next step is to sit in silence and listen for the answer. Ask for a synchronicity or a sign. When asking an "either-or" question, sincerely request help from the guides such as, "If what I want is for my highest and best good, then so be it."
Choquette suggests that people become better acquainted with their own individual spirit to increase awareness of angels and spirit guides. "Take notice of what fortifies and feeds your own unique spirit, paying special attention to how sensitive and aware you are to it."
How to Handle Negative Spirits
Just as some people on earth are not benevolent, not all spirits are loving and supportive. Byrnes suggests respectfully and assertively sending a negative force on its way in the same manner they would a negative person on earth. Andrews adds, "Remember, nothing within the spirit realm can harm you as long as you maintain control and authority over your life."
Angels and spirit guides will communicate through a facilitator like Diana Byrnes or to individuals with the help of meditation or stress reduction or communing with nature. Spirit guides are accessible, supportive, and can lead people to live their best lives. If asked with sincerity, spirit guides will make their love and presence known.
